Christian Music Requirements and Suggested Schedule

Course Requirements are as follows (Total 132 hours):

General Education
, 39 hours, consisting of:
History of Western Civilization, 6 hours; English, 6 hours; General Psychology, 3 hours; Speech Communication, 3 hours; Literature (English or American), 6 hours; Introduction to Philosophy, 3 hours; The Teaching of Science, 3 hours; Freshman Orientation, 1 hour; General Electives, 8 hours.

Bible/Theology, 30 hours, consisting of:
Bible Survey, 6 hours; Gospels, 6 hours; Pentateuch I, 3 hours; Acts, 3 hours; Christian Beliefs, 3 hours; Theology of Holiness, 3 hours; Romans, 3 hours; Music in the Bible, 3 hours.

Professional Education, 63 hours, consisting of:
Music Theory, 12 hours; Introduction to Music Literature, 3 hours; Music History, 6 hours; Applied Major, 9 hours; Applied Minor, 4 hours; Hymnology, 2 hours; Church Music Administration, 3 hours; Principles of Conducting, 2 hours; Advanced Conducting, 2 hours; Music Organization, 6 hours; Church Music Internship, 2 hours; Percussion & Brass Pedagogy, 3 hours; String & Woodwind Pedagogy, 3 hours; Pedagogies, 6 hours, as follows:

  • Piano Majors: Piano Pedagogy & Literature, 3 hours; Service Playing & Accompaniment, 3 hours.
  • Voice Majors: Voice Pedagogy & Literature, 3 hours; Choral Methods, 3 hours.
  • Other Majors may choose either the Piano or the Voice Pedagogy.

A formal recital, arranged with the music department, is required.
Those who do not pass a Music Theory qualifying examination must take MU 100 Elements of Music. No academic credit toward the Advanced Diploma in Music will be granted for MU 100.
Music students are required to be involved in a Music Organization or special assignment every semester they are on the Music Program. Placement will be determined by the Music Director.
(A three-year Diploma in Music is available for those who do not reach the level required for the recital.)
