Advanced Diploma in Christian Music Education
Objectives: In addition to the General Objectives, the Christian Music Education Program is designed specifically: - To enable the student to develop a Biblical/Christian philosophy of music.
- To promote active participation in campus music organizations in order to provide practical experience in the ministry of music.
- To aid the student in developing skills in piano, voice and other instruments.
- To prepare the student for a music ministry in the local congregation or other phase of Christian work.
- To develop the ability to teach music in the Christian school in Kindergarten through twelfth grade.
- To achieve an advanced level of music proficiency in one's major instrument and be prepared to teach that instrument in the Christian school.
- To develop a working knowledge of teaching music in observation, and supervised student teaching experience.
- To prepare the Music major for graduate level study in music.
Course Requirements are as follows (Total 136 hours): General Education, 31 hours, consisting of: History of Western Civilization, 6 hours; English, 6 hours; General Psychology, 3 hours; Speech Communication, 3 hours; Literature Electives, 3 hours; Educational Psychology, 3 hours; Introduction to Christian Education, 3 hours; Introduction to Philosophy, 3 hours; Freshman Orientation, 1 hour.
Bible/Theology, 30 hours, consisting of: Bible Survey, 6 hours; Gospels, 6 hours; Pentateuch I, 3 hours; Acts, 3 hours; Christian Beliefs, 3 hours; Theology of Holiness, 3 hours; Romans, 3 hours; Music in the Bible, 3 hours.
Professional Education, 75 hours, consisting of: Music Theory, 12 hours; Applied Major, 9 hours; Applied Minor, 4 hours; Introduction to Music Literature, 3 hours; Music History, 6 hours; Hymnology, 2 hours; Church Music Administration, 3 hours; Principles and Advanced Conducting, 4 hours; Music Organization, 6 hours; Teaching Elementary & Junior High Music, 3 hours; Teaching Secondary Music, 3 hours; Choral Methods, 3 hours, Music Student Teaching, 8 hours; Percussion & Brass Pedagogy, 3 hours; String & Woodwind Pedagogy, 3 hours; Pedagogies, 6 hours, as follows: - Piano Majors: Piano Pedagogy & Literature, 3 hours; Service Playing & Accompaniment, 3 hours.
- Voice Majors: Voice Pedagogy & Literature, 3 hours; Choral Methods, 3 hours.
- Other Majors may choose either the Piano or the Voice Pedagogy.
A formal recital, arranged with the music department, is required. The Christian Music Education major must demonstrate superior ability in one area of music performance and will take instruction in this field every semester. This performance proficiency may be Voice, Piano, Organ, or one of the Standard Orchestral Instruments. Vocalists and instrumentalists must elect piano as their applied minor until they are able to pass the secondary piano examination. At the end of the sophomore year, the student must pass a platform test in his applied major before being considered approved for a major in Church Music. A public recital must be given during the senior year, and a music internship in a local church is required during the senior year. A student must pass the theory entrance exam or make up the deficiency in course MU100 Elements of Music. The student must also prepare for an audition in their major instrument to present before the Music Faculty before entering into this program.
